How Painful is Getting a Dental Implant?

One of the most common concerns patients have is whether or not they’ll be able to feel anything during the dental implant procedure. It is uncomfortable for most patients to hear or feel the dentist drilling into their jaw. Surgery of any kind is stressful for most people.

Fortunately, there are great options for you to choose from to ensure you have pain and discomfort-free experience during the implant procedure.

What are Types of Sedation Methods Available to the Dentist?

There are four types of sedation dentist use:

  • Oral or pill sedation is the most common type of sedation dentistry used.
  • IV Sedation – where you receive the medicine via your vein, and the amount can be continuously adjusted.
  • Sleep Sedation or Anesthesia is general anesthesia where you are asleep during the procedure.
  • Nitros Oxide, or referred to as laughing gas, is where you inhale the NO to help you relax.

How Do I Choose which One is Right for Me?

Your dentist will help you make the correct choice. Each Sleep Dentistry choices have its advantage and disadvantages and cost associated with them. The effectiveness of these choices depends on the individual. The rule of thumb is for the patient to have a minimal amount of sedation where they will be stress and pain-free.

Your Dentist Experience Will Make All the Difference

For experienced doctors, inserting your dental implants should be a relatively painless procedure. Some discomfort to be expected, mostly after the implant procedure and when the numbness and sedation wear off.

Is It Normal to Have Discomfort After the Implant Procedure?

The area around the new dental implant will be sore along with the surrounding jawbone. It’s also common to feel pain or discomfort in your cheeks, chin, or underneath your eyes. This discomfort will diminish over the next three to seven days.
