Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!

If it’s your first child, you may not know that seeing your dentist is not only very safe, but highly recommended during your pregnancy. The following list should help you understand pregnancy and oral health and what changes to your teeth and gums to expect while expecting!

Dental Cavities

Sore gums, morning sickness, exhaustion could understandably lead to less brushing and flossing. Unfortunately, less brushing combined with possibly more sugar consumption could lead to an increase in cavities. In addition, morning sickness could lead to increased tooth enamel wear and sensitivity. It is important to continue good habits of brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and using mouthwash to help prevent these problems.

Gum Inflammation

dentist HoustonDue to the increase and changes in hormones during pregnancy, may women suffer from inflammation in the gums that can cause tenderness and bleeding while brushing or flossing. If left untreated, it can lead to more serious gum disease. This is called “Pregnancy Gingivitis” and could require more frequent cleanings during the pregnancy.

Pregnancy Tumors

Lastly, plaque in your gums might cause the development of large, red swellings that bleed easily when touched. These are called “pregnancy tumors” though they are not cancerous! They usually develop between the teeth and most all disappear after the baby is born. Speak to your dentist if you are concerned with them as they may need to be removed if they do not clear up on their own.

Make sure you talk to your dentist and let them know if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant so that they can answer all of your questions and recommend appropriate preventative care or necessary treatment. Together, you can plan for a healthy pregnancy!
