Not For All Orthodontic Problems
There are many removable appliances you can choose from that are suited for many dental purposes such moving teeth, holding teeth in position, influencing jaw growth and guiding tooth eruption. Not all orthodontic problems can be fixed using just removable appliances though. In most cases, they are used to complement fixed appliances.
In order for removable appliances to achieve the expected outcome, every patient must be committed to wearing them as required. Otherwise, the orthodontic treatment needs to be redone or extend the time frame of your treatment and to move your teeth back may take more time next time.
Retainers are easy to remove and just as easy to put back so there is no excuse not to wear them. This removable appliance is used for retention purposes, especially when your braces have just been taken out. Retainers help the teeth adapt to its new position. If you don’t wear retainers as instructed, your teeth may go back to its original position and all those years of wearing braces will be good for nothing. Usually, retainers are worn for six months straight and depending on the assessment, either you will required to wear them only while sleeping or for a few more years.
When you take out retainers to brush and floss, keep them safe by tucking them in the retainer case. Clean your retainers regularly to avoid accumulating bacteria in your dental appliance that can cause infection. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing your retainers, inform your dentist right away so necessary adjustments or assessment can be done.
Elastics are those rubber bands attached to your braces. They are used to produce the force to maintain the pressure on the teeth so they move to the intended position. They must be worn every day, all the time in order to keep the force constant. Since elastics wear out, it is important to change them every day. You may only remove elastics when you need to brush your braces, gums and teeth. After that, you need to put elastics back again to continue the treatment. Otherwise, the treatment may take a longer time to finish. If you forget to put the elastics back on, no need to use double, just put them right back as soon as possible.
Make sure you have enough supply so can replace them every day. Since you will be the one to insert and remove your elastics every day, follow instructions so you can get used to it.
They come in different colors too so if you want to make wearing braces a fun experience as well, you may ask your dentist for a variety of shades, if available.
