What is a Denture Reline?

A denture reline is a material used to line the inside of a denture that touches the skin.

When you have a new denture,  skin rubbing and pain are normal. The pressure on the skin from the denture causes inflammation and swelling. After wearing the denture for a period of the skin heals and toughens. During the toughing process, most new dentures start with a soft reline placed inside of them. It allows the skin to heal and fits the denture to the changing shape of the mouth.

The softness of the material defines the different types of denture relines

What are the Different Types Denture Relines?

  1. Temporary Soft Reline uses smooth and temporary bandage or cushion material. Used most often to fit dentures on the day of extractions or oral surgery, this liner is very flimsy is removed with finger pressure. It usually lasts for a few days to a few weeks.
  2. Temporary Rigid Reline is a medium-strength, resilient, semi-soft reline. It is used inside dentures for about three months and provides a good fit and shape while the gums heal.
  3. Permanent Soft Reline is a permanently soft material that is part of the permanent denture and serves as a cushion for thin gums that suffer when dentures press on them. These type of dentures have a shorter life-span and are for the patients with “knife ridge” types of jawbones. Only dentists with significant experience in denture construction can choose this kind of treatment successfully.
  4. Permanent Hard Reline This is used to refit an old denture. As the gums shrink, dentures lose their fit. The hard plastic of this Reline will be reshaped to fit the new shape of the gums and jaw bone.
