A dental lab manager is someone who manages a dental laboratory. They may be a qualified dental technician, but this is not always the case as their major task is to oversee all the day-to-day operations of the dental laboratory and to make sure everything runs smoothly. This may include marketing to gain more business, overseeing sales and payroll, and implementing various development strategies.
Dental laboratories are responsible for fulfilling prescriptions for dental appliances that are written by dentists. They manufacture crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers night guards and mouthguards and appliances for sleep apnea and orthodontic appliances to mention just a few. Once the appliances are finished they are subjected to rigorous quality control before being returned to the dentist for fitting.
It’s the responsibility of the dental lab manager to ensure orders are picked up from dentists and are delivered on time as otherwise an appointment could be wasted. They also need to be good at problem solving as things can occasionally go wrong or pieces of equipment will fail and will need repairing, and this has to be done to ensure the smooth running of the laboratory. It essential to maintain a good supply of dental materials, and to make sure equipment is well-maintained and meets current safety standards. They must also deal with staff concerns and problems, hiring and firing, and any complaints from dentists.
A dental lab manager needs to be someone who is responsible and who can operate well under stress. They must be able to manage people and need to ensure that everyone does the job they are required to do.
