Top Common Denture Problems

Dentures don’t have to be a bad thing.  With the right fit and quality workmanship, they can look and feel wonderful. Your dentist at Midtown Dentistry in Houston, TX can help you deal with common denture problems to help make your denture experience pleasant.

What are the Typical Denture Problems?

1. Premature Aging With Old Dentures: If you think your face is starting to look old, it may be time to get new dentures.  One of the advantages of new dentures is that straighten and lengthen your face — making you look young again.

2. Poor Fitting Dentures: Dentures that don’t fit properly are something you need to talk to your dentist about as soon as possible.  When they don’t fit, it causes extra friction between your soft gum tissues and your dentures.  This not only hurts, but the sores could become infected.

3. Poor Chewing Ability: Your dentures should feel and function like normal teeth.  If they don’t, you’ll have trouble chewing which could ultimately affect your health if certain foods are eliminated from your diet because of it.

4. Unnatural Looking Teeth:  People shouldn’t know that you are wearing dentures.  Some common issues of dentures that aren’t made for you are teeth that look like “Chicklet” teeth, dark teeth and teeth that look too flat, show too much of your gum line, or look like a picket fence.  Your dentures should look as natural as possible — and show just the right amount of teeth.  Not too much and too little.

5. Make You Look Old: If your dentures are too short, it makes your face shorter and your wrinkles deeper.  We all know that wrinkles make us look old – especially around the mouth. Even if your dentures originally fit perfect, over the years, your ridge tissue changes and shrinks.  When this happens, you’ll need to get new dentures as unstable dentures will make the ridges shrink even more making you look even older.

6. Jaw Disorders: The way your jaw works can be messed up by too much denture tooth wear.  You could end up with neck or jaw pain caused by temporomandibular joint (aka TMJ) disorder.

7. Bad Oral Hygiene: This one is all on you.  If you don’t brush and clean your dentures properly, food will get stuck in them and cause bacteria growth.  This not only will give you bad breath, but it weakens the denture.

8.Psychological / Emotional Stress: Feeling comfortable in your dentures is essential as it affects your psychological and emotional well-being.  If your dentures don’t look good, it makes it hard to eat and speak.  It may also cause you to stop socializing due to embarrassment.

ADJUSTING TO YOUR DENTURES

Midtown Dentistry has experienced dentists who are familiar with all aspects of dentures and the problems that patients may face with their new dentures.

What are Common Problems with New Dentures?

  1. Too Much Saliva: Creating too much saliva is a normal denture problem.  Whenever you put anything into your mouth, your saliva glands get activated.  In the beginning, your body will treat your dentures like they are food and activate when you put them in. Within a couple of days, your body will figure out they are a part of you and your salvia production will go back to normal.
  2.  Strange Facial Expressions: When you first get your dentures, you might think your face looks a little strange.  Again, this is normal.  Your facial muscles need to adjust to the new dentures, and soon your facial expressions will look the old you.
  3. Feeling of Too Much in the Mouth: Your new dentures are going to feel strange at first. Feeling like they are too big or too full is normal.  Eventually, you’ll get used to how they feel in your mouth and they will feel natural.
  4. Feeling Loose: When you first get dentures, your body won’t be used to having them in your mouth and will try to dislodge them just like it would anything else it thinks, be there.  This will make the dentures feel like they are loose.  Don’t worry. In a little while, the muscles in your cheeks and tongue will stop trying to get rid of the dentures and may even help hold them in place.
  5. Hard to Chew: Yes, it’s true.  It’s going to be hard to chew at first.  But as you get used to the dentures, your chewing will improve.  Start with small bites of softer food and then move up to harder foods.  Practice chewing softly until you get used to how your dentures work.
