Post operative care is an integral part of the whole oral surgery procedure. Healing period depends on an individual’s reaction to medicine, antibiotic and type of surgery done. You must also slow down with your regular activities and avoid strenuous tasks for at least 24 hours. Post operative instructions are easy to follow and they will help tremendously with the healing process.

Pain Management

Your dentist will prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to hasten the healing process. Let your dentist know if you have allergy, are pregnant or have special medical condition. Pain management need not be complicated. You may buy over the counter medicine at your local drugstore as most of them are readily available. If you become dizzy after taking pain medicine, make sure that you keep your head above your heart level when you need to lay down. If are sitting, keep an upright position.

Bleeding

After the surgery, the patient may have to deal with bleeding. This is normal so there is no need worry about it. Bite on a clean and moist gauze to stop the bleeding. Remove and replace the gauze every 30 minutes until the bleeding has subsided. Observe the bleeding. Excessive bleeding needs immediate medical attention. Call your dentist and inform him or her right away.

Swelling

Swelling is also common after an oral surgery. Place an ice pack over the affected area for about 30 minutes. Some dentists provide ice packs for their patients. You may also use frozen bag of peas, corn or ice as an alternative to ice packs.

Keep an upright position to lessen the swelling. Your head must be elevated or above heart level when sleeping. Use several pillows to help you maintain a comfortable sleeping position.

To hasten blot clotting, which is the first step of the healing process, avoid spitting, rinsing your mouth vigorously, touching, brushing or any activity that may dislodge the blood clot.

Diet

Your diet must be adjusted as well at least for the next 24 hours after surgery. Avoid eating hard and sticky food items. Go on a soft diet and drink plenty of water. Do not drink carbonated beverage for at least three days after the surgery. Do not use straw as well as it may dislodge blood clot from the affected area and the wound may start bleeding again.

Minimizing Complications

Avoid smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages for the next seven days after your surgery. If you wear dentures, discuss with your dentist how soon you can wear them again. Sore spots may develop if you wear your dentures within 24 hours of surgery. This may slow down the healing process as well but your dentist can assess the situation and come up with the best possible solution to your situation.

If you had a major surgery, more precautions must be taken. Your dentist will devise a plan according to your situation. You may also need to visit the dentist more often than average to ensure that you are healing well and prevent or minimize complications. If you have any questions in regards to your post operative instructions please call your dentist.
