An Eye for Detail
Our fantastic dental lab assistants work under the direction of our dental technicians, using written prescriptions supplied by dentists or dental specialists. They help construct some of the appliances fabricated by qualified dental technicians, translating written instructions into 3-D dental appliances.
Their duties vary by day but include processing the impressions sent in by dentists and casting them up to construct plaster or stone models that are used to make dental appliances. Our dental lab assistants make mouthguards and other thermoplastic dental appliances and construct the wax registration rims used by dentists in the initial stages of the denture construction. Additionally they’ll construct impression trays used to take more accurate impressions of the patient’s mouth prior to the construction of dentures.
DENTAL LAB ASSISTANT AS A CAREER CHOICE
This type of career is ideal for anyone who enjoys working with their hands and who has a good eye for detail. Dental appliances are precision manufactured so it’s important to have good hand-eye coordination and good manual dexterity.
Dental labs have to make sure all the appliances are returned in time for dental appointments, so people working in this environment need to have good time management skills. The ability to work as part of a team is very important, as often dental lab assistants will construct the initial part of an appliance that will need to be finished and checked by a qualified dental technician.
