What is General Anaesthetic and Twilight Sleep?

Sedation dentistry is technique by which patients receive necessary dental treatment in a state of relaxation by administering anesthesia drugs during their dental treatment.

There are various types of sedation dentistry techniques which are used by dentists. The amount of sedation your Houston dentist will use on you depends patient by patient and by the kind of work you are getting done on your teeth.   Intravenous is one common choice of sedation. General Anesthesia is another type many dentists use to relax their patients.

Intravenous sedation is when the drug to help prevent dental fear or anxiety is given to the patient through a needle.  While the intravenous drug is in your system you will  be consciousness. You’ll understand what the dentist is saying when using intravenous sedation, but you’ll feel incredibly relaxed.

Intravenous sedation induces such a deep relaxation that most people are no longer thinking about the what’s doing.  Many do not remember what happened when they were in the dental chair and time seems to pass in seconds. The Intravenous sedation technique works well if you have  tend to gag in the dental chair. Intravenous sedation diminishes gag reflex to significant degree.

Intravenous sedation should be given by a anesthesiologist in order to be safe. The effect of the intravenous sedative drug is fast and the patient’s recovery back to normal is also quick. The dose of drug needed for the perfect  level of sedation in a patient can be tailored according to individual’s need. This requires constant monitoring of rate of the sedative drug being administered intravenously by trained anesthesiologist. This intravenous sedation should not be administered by regular practicing dentist who has not been specially trained.

General anesthesia is the technique used for sedation used for more complex dental treatments, for example, dental implants, surgery involved in removal of impacted tooth in jaw bone, fractured jaw bones, procedures involving oral cancer etc.

General anesthesia is puts the patient in a controlled state of unconsciousness that can be reversed at any time.  General anesthesia is generally useful in times when a patient has to go through long surgical procedures and when they will need to have their muscles in the proper relaxed state for a long time. Inhaled gaseous anesthetics which are used most commonly are chlorofluorocarbons. These are delivered to the patient’s inhaled gas stream with precise accuracy using vaporizers. In addition, opioid analgesic is given intravenously along with induction drug to produce synergistic effect while inducing anesthesia. The airway is secured and endotracheal tube is placed.

Under general anesthesia you would not be conscious so responding to instructions is not possible.   While this may sound wonderful to those who have extreme dental fear, there is a greater chance of complications with general anesthesia.
